There is nothing like a sexy red lip! Red can take you from your ordinary day to feeling instantly feminine.  I usually lean towards a natural look, but if going out, it’s a amazing what a little red lipstick can do.  Since my skin tone is more olive,  I tend to wear more coral reds, like a pimiento or a crimson red, but there are literally thousands of red shades of lipstick to choose from.  I have been disappointed before where I went with a shade I saw a girlfriend wear, only to find out that it did not suit my complexion at all.

A safe and general rule is that women with fair skin should lean towards true reds with no orange undertones.  Medium-skinned women look best in pink and orange.  While dark-skinned women can go for darker shades like wine and burgundy.  If in doubt, the best way to find your shade of red is to go visit a cosmetic store like Blue Mercury, Sephora or Benefit.

Red Lip Tips:

- Don't play up your eyes. Let your lips do the talking. Go with a neutral shadow and oomph it up with mascara.
- Prevent bleeding. Apply concealer around the border of your mouth.
- Avoid getting lipstick on your teeth. After applying, put your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around it, then slowly pull it out to remove excess color.
- Lip liner should match the color of your natural lips, not the lipstick.
- Exfoliate your lips: I swear by using my tooth brush with a little baking soda on it.

My favorite shades of red:

  1. Space N. K. Lipstick Queen (Sinner in Red) – $18
  2. Chanel Rouge Allure (Insaisissable) – $37
  3. Bite (Persimon) – $26
  4. Mac (Lady Danger) -$14
  5. NARS (Heat Wave) – $24
  6. Chanel Allure Ink (Luxuriant) – $37

So what’s your go-to red lipstick?  Leave a comment, I’d love to know.

I like the paint stick by Revlon just because the lipstick disappears quickly

I agree. I’ve never been a fan of long lasting lipstick because it dries out your lips. Recently, I found this Chanel Rouge Allure Ink (long lasting velvet like lipstick)…amazing!! A must try!
