A couple of weeks ago I was playing tennis outdoors.  While driving away from the club, a lady stopped me in the parking lot and asked if I was using something in particular that made my skin glow.  I started laughing and told her that clearly the “glow” she was referring to was probably just sweat.  But I went home and over the course of two weeks, I tried every one of my products to find out which gave me that “glow”.

As we age, we have to pay more attention to our skin, so I get a facial twice a year: in the fall and spring.  Some estheticians would recommend more of a regimen, but I say go with what you feel your skin needs.  Don’t worry, your skin will tell you.  Usually after a long summer in the sun and despite using sunscreen, my skin is dull and in dire need of exfoliation.  Since we live in the Northeast, winter and the low humidity draws the moisture from your skin, so a facial to help boost hydration is perfect for spring.  And if you want to know where I get my facials, I go to Daga at Lanphier Spa in Darien.  She is incredibly gentle, yet knowledgable.

As for a regimen, my rule in general is to protect in the morning and repair at night.  There are some products I am committed to, only because they have proven to work time and time again.  But I always incorporate something new and that’s because your skin gets used to the same everyday routine.

So, what can make your skin glow?  After a few trial and errors, here are my 6 secrets.  For those of you who live in Fairfield county, you can visit Blue Mercury or The Cosmetic Boutique.

1. Exfoliate

You should do this once a week using a soft scrubbing exfoliant or a peel.  I’ve tried two I am fond of.  Power Glow Peel Wipes from m-61 containing glycolic and salicylic acid which help to remove dead cells.   Laura Mercier Face Polish made with purifying microbeads that gently scrub your face and essentially have the same effect.   It’s a matter of choice, but if you have sensitive skin, I would stick with a scrub, rather than a peel.  I actually use both and switch between them every week.

2. Renew

Retin A was originally designed to treat acne, but it was discovered along the way that it  helped improve skin texture, including diminished wrinkles and brown spots.  I use ZO Medical Retamax  and it took my skin a little getting used to, but it really has visibly improved my complexion.  I would recommend speaking to your esthetician, but generally you start with once a week (always at night) for week, then twice a week for two weeks, then three times a week for three weeks and so on, until you can use it every other night.  You also have to use a sunscreen.  Retin-A causes the skin to peel slightly, but if used correctly, it will peel gradually.  Trust me, I’ve tried it. This will improve the texture and feel of your skin and you will definitely notice a difference.  Just be patient.

3. Repair

The purpose of serums is to repair and help boost certain elements in your skin.  If you are using a Retin-A at night, I would recommend Vitamin C serum in the morning.  I love Vitamin C and the one from SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is amazing!  It’s packed full of antioxidants which lighten and brighten the complexion and help protect your skin from damaging pollutants.  Use it under your daily moisturizer.  If you want an instant firm and plump skin,  prior to a party, for example, this Instant Firming Beauty Shot from Ren is pretty incredible.  Apply it under your moisturizer.  And for that extra oomph, dab a little bit of it on throughout the evening over your make-up.

4. Moisturize

Recently, I bought the Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Repair Creme daytime moisturizer and I’m obsessed.  My skin looks plump and glowing the minute I apply it.  Even after I put on my foundation my skin still maintains that dewy appearance.  Now, I know some women prefer a more matte finish, but if you like this sort of glow, this product will deliver.  It does not have any SPF in it, so if you are using RetinA, be careful to not expose your face to the sun too much.  I switched to this moisturizer for the winter, since it provides great hydration and helps firm, smooth and rejuvenate.

5. Bronze

I’m a big fan of bronzers, particularly since I try to avoid tanning my face.   For that sun-kissed effect, apply at the hairline, across the bridge of your nose, under your cheekbones, and a bit on the jaw line.  I love this one from Bobbi Brown.  It’s light -weight with a matte finish, which will allow you to add a blush that has a little shimmer.

6. Blush

My all time favorite blush is ORGASM from NARS!  I never leave home without applying it.  It gives you that naturally flushed cheek and if I am in a rush and can only apply one product, this is the one!  Well, and maybe a little mascara.
