A few years ago, as we vacationed in our favorite little coastal town of Kennebunkport, I came upon a little jewelry shop called Minka. It was off the beaten path, in a very cool barn-like building. The logo attracted me almost immediately: simple, modern, yet bold. As I walked in, I fell in love with everything. Even the music was spot on: a Spotify playlist of the artist Chris Larochelle-the owner and husband of jewelry designer Michelle Rose. I could not leave without buying a few gems which I still wear to this day.
Fast forward to this past week and I had to stop into my favorite store. They’ve moved locations and are now on the main strip in Dock Sqaure. They’ve also introduced cool new local artisans, so the store has taken on a refined and cozy, organic feel. Not in a sustenance way, but in harmonious and captivating kind of way. An apothecary in a corner of the store showcases 100% natural Kennebunkport made salts and body soaps, while hand-made local pottery can be spotted on the raw wooden shelves. Jewelry is sprinkled throughout with intentional purpose. Some to accent the other artists and some showcasing their own vividly colored pieces. The jewelry, all hand made by Michelle Rose and other local designers, is made of silver and copper with accents of semi-precious gemstones.
As usual, I didn’t leave empty handed. I realize this is way off the beaten path for my local followers, but if you are ever in Maine I recommend you make a quick stop at Kennebunkport. Not just for Minka but for that perfect getaway from the usual that still has the feel of home….I guess a post from our last vacation is now a must.
