I was only 15 years old when Pretty Woman debuted. It was the 90’s! Jackets had shoulder pads sewn in. New Kids On The Block were popular and Kate Moss graced the covers of magazines topless, alongside Mark Wahlberg for a Calvin Klein ad. I was a Sophomore in high-school and my beauty regimen consisted of Clearasil in hopes to diminish the clusters of pimples covering my forehead. Ah, to be young!
Today, the girl staring at me in the reflection of my bathroom mirror is not Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but despite the few fine lines and whispers of grey hair, she’s aging well. As the last few months of this year dwindle away and I, quicker than anticipated, am approaching a new decade, thought about myself as aging and how I felt about it. Well, there is no secret fountain of youth. We age. And truthfully, I am at total peace with it. I didn’t think I would be, but I am.
If I were to just rely on my genes, I think I’d turn out decent. My mom is turning 60 this November and she looks like she drank an ageless coolaid when she was about 40…the woman is gorgeous! But it’s not just about the genes. I’ve always been meticulous about my health, well-being and beauty regimen. Our skin is our largest organ! We take it for granted, but it is surprisingly resilient.
Here are a couple of new products I have recently began using and I am truly loving in hopes to maintain a younger looking skin.
I wanted to also talk a little about laser hair removal. I have been waxing since I was 15. I remember when I wanted to shave my legs and my mom said, “Are you crazy? You want to grow a beard on your legs?”. She meant that when shaving, your hair root regenerates and gets stronger, therefore the hair follicle developing and becoming thicker. We’ve all brushed up against our husband’s five o’clock shadow and although that may be sexy, I’m not so sure that it’s so appealing on your legs. So I began waxing, which has the opposite effect of shaving. It slowly degenerates the hair follicle so the hair grows back thinner. But waxing is NOT fun! And after many years of waxing not just my legs, (I’ll leave the rest to your discretion), I had enough. Who knew turning 40 would bring on so many new regimens?
Laser hair removal basically beams high concentrated light into the hair follicle destroying the hair. Let me reiterate that! It kills your unwanted hair and it never grows back. Voila!!! Best invention ever, after the dishwasher. It takes a few sessions and there is mild discomfort which can be alleviated with a numbing cream apres laser. It is brilliant and I think, the best money I’ve ever spent!
My recommendation is Dr. Sharon C. DeChiara at Spa Chiara in Mount Kisko. I know it’s bit of a hike, but when you trust someone you go to them. First of all she is a board certified plastic surgeon and she has a phenomenal staff. Spa Chiara offers all sorts of skin treatments and I definitely recommend inquiring about your skin routine while you are there. This is how I got turned onto the Retamax.
Thank you all for indulging in my beauty secrets. I do hope you try some of these products and let me know your thoughts.
